Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled or solid structures associated with the ovary. Nature of the cysts vary but the vast majority are benign.

Symptoms / signs may include:

  • No symptoms if cysts are small (eg. small cysts associated with ovulation)

  • Pain / discomfort – can be due to bleeding into the cyst, rupture (burst) or twist

  • Pain with the intercourse

Symptomatic cysts may need to be removed usually by laparoscopy (key-hole surgery). In some cases, ovarian cancer needs to be excluded even for asymptomatic patients.
